Your data

Exactly what PaneScale stores, where it lives, which requests it makes, and what leaves your computer.

PaneScale is local-first. This page lists everything it stores and every situation in which data leaves your machine.

What is stored, and where

WhatWhere
Database — chats, threads, teammates, memories, skills, tasks, runs, routines, workflows, settings, measured usage, approvals%APPDATA%\com.sherobi.panescale\panescale.db (SQLite)
Subscription limits and their historyusage.json in the data folder
Token counts read from your session logsspend-cache.json in the data folder
Worktrees%APPDATA%\com.sherobi.panescale\w\
CheckpointsPrivate refs refs/panescale/checkpoints/… inside your repositories
Worktree branchespanescale/grid/… and panescale/autopilot/… inside your repositories
Autopilot reportsFrozen JSON files in the data folder; copies wherever you save them
Attachments pasted into chatsThe data folder
VideosProjects and exports in the data folder
Voice models and whisper.cppThe data folder
Account profilesOne configuration folder per profile in the data folder
Interface settings — theme, open chat, unsent drafts — and cookies of pages in the browser paneWebView profile in %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.sherobi.panescale
Program files%LOCALAPPDATA%\PaneScale
Downloaded updates%LOCALAPPDATA%\PaneScale Updates — the last five installers

The paths above are the Windows ones. On macOS the data folder is ~/Library/Application Support/com.sherobi.panescale and the program is /Applications/PaneScale.app; on Linux the data folder is ~/.local/share/com.sherobi.panescale and the program ~/.local/share/PaneScale. The install guide lists every folder per system.

The program folder and the data folder are separate: updating or reinstalling never touches your data. Settings → Updates & support shows the exact data folder and Settings → Storage its size.

What PaneScale reads

WhatWhy
The session logs of Claude Code and Codex in your user folderTo compute spend. Only token counts and model names are kept — no prompts, no answers
The stored sign-in of Claude Code and CodexTo query your subscription limits. Read only — never refreshed, changed or copied
Your project filesWhen you open them in the files panel, search, or use Point & Fix source search
package.json of your projectTo propose checks

What leaves your computer

WhenWhatTo whom
You run a coding agentWhatever that CLI sends — prompts, file contents it readsThe CLI’s provider, under your account
PaneScale shows your limitsA usage query with your CLI’s stored sign-in — no prompts, no codeAnthropic or OpenAI, at most about once a minute per account
PaneScale prices your usageA download of public price lists, once a dayGitHub (LiteLLM), models.dev and the OpenUsage price list
You download a Voice model or whisper.cppA normal HTTPS downloadHugging Face or GitHub
You import issues or publish a draft PRRequests through your gh CLIGitHub, under your sign-in
You use a model step in a workflowThe promptOllama or the endpoint you configured
You call a managed MCP connectionThe tool argumentsThat MCP server
You connect to a Remote SSH hostYour terminal sessionThat host
You email a diagnostics exportThe file you attachUs, only because you sent it

PaneScale itself doesn’t send your code, prompts or usage anywhere. Updates are read from the local update folder.

Voice recordings

Recordings are written to a temporary file for transcription and deleted immediately afterwards. Only the resulting text remains — wherever you dictated it.

Diagnostics

The diagnostics export contains the build, database integrity, engine and feature counters and recent errors — no conversations, no source code, and secrets are removed. You decide where to save it and whether to send it.

Backups

Back up the data folder to keep chats, runs, teammates, tasks and settings. Checkpoints and worktree branches live in your repositories and are covered by whatever backs those up.

Deleting everything

  1. Merge or discard worktrees you still need — see Lanes.
  2. Uninstall PaneScale — see Uninstall for each system.
  3. On Windows delete %APPDATA%\com.sherobi.panescale, %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.sherobi.panescale (the WebView profile) and %LOCALAPPDATA%\PaneScale Updates. On macOS and Linux delete the data folder and the PaneScale Updates folder next to it.
  4. In each repository, remove the checkpoint refs and branches if you want them gone: git for-each-ref --format="%(refname)" refs/panescale/ lists them, git update-ref -d <ref> deletes one, and git branch -D removes old panescale/… branches.
